The best shark fishing charters on Marco Island

Florida has a wide range of species and subspecies of sharks, but we primarily catch just a few types. The backwaters and the nearshore sea is quite shallow, warm, very murky, and dark; a perfect environment for ambush hunters like sharks. Compared to regular fishing in South Florida, there’s a bit more thought into catching sharks around Marco Island. Luckily, we can actually target a particular species of sharks by areas that we fish at and baits we use. First and foremost we recommend the catch and release method with our charters for two reasons:

    • Although a few species can be eaten, sharks hold and maintain very high levels of mercury.
    • Sharks are a protected ( not endangered ) fish. Unless customers insist even the legal catch sharks are released unharmed.

The most common types of sharks on Marco Island are:

  • Blacktip

  • Atlantic Sharpnose

  • Spinner

  • Lemon

  • Bull

  • Hammerhead

  • Bonnethead

South Florida shark fishing knowledge

Over the years, we have learned a lot from our South Florida shark fishing charters. For example, most sharks hunt up. Because of this, we found that floating baits a few feet from the surface will hook most species. However, this method of shark fishing doesn’t work on all species. Some sharks such as hammerheads hunt at the bottom of the ocean. They do this because of where the physical positioning of their mouth is located; they need to eat bottom feeders in the ocean floor. Baiting up and down can increase the odds of getting what you’re after. You’ll learn much more about sharks on our Marco Island fishing charters.

How we catch so many sharks

To increase the chance of catching a particular shark on our charters, I keep records of what we catch. One thing that I discovered is that for the time and money that it costs in blooding the water, it is not worth it. Nor do I believe the saying “sharks smell a drop of blood for miles;” I just don’t see it.

What bait we use to catch sharks

My top baits are the local fish, but only If the size is right and we have the legal ability to use them. While in the backwaters, we use a type of fish that oils up the water quite well; all sharks are attracted to this bait. We also offer Marco Island backwater fishing services.

After years of catching these sharks on my tours, my rate of success didn’t get any more sharks using that chum bait. In addition to this, products like dry blood chum are very expensive.

Our preferred method of catching sharks

I prefer steel wire over the cable that’s sold – it’s an easier cut. What our guests should know is sharks have tough cartilage in the bite section of their mouth, so we always cut the wire over ripping out the hook. Luckily, 95% of the time we can get the hook out early, but that other 5% we simply cut the wire. If the hook remains, it melts in a surprisingly short amount of time. The shark can still eat and by weeks end its dissolved. This is far better than providing surgery on the shark on the deck.

We hunt shark in what I believe is the best time – an outgoing tide. First off, any scent is carried out to sea. It attracts more fish. Second, sharks don’t like being shorted in water. We think that’s when to put lines in. A high outgoing tide. It makes perfect sense. There are different types of sharks and fish in Marco Island that we help to catch with lots of adventure and fun.

We can almost always name the shark before we see it surface. By the manner in which it fights. One method which we never use If to fight the shark with the boat. It’s unduly stressed to muscle it hard. Further, we believe the man must fight the fish, and not the boat; it’s only fair. We have proper and professionals tools like fishing tackle to catch the shark effectively and safely.

All trips for sharks are in advance. We don’t fish at night because it defeats the purpose of seeing the animal up close. Only some species and sizes are boated. The larger sharks stay in the water because they can’t live through being hoisted into the boat. Who Shark fishing is for

Sometimes, sharking is a lot of sitting and waiting. Other times we can’t keep firm catching them one after another. In any event, you’ll have a great time. Our shark charters are slightly more money. It’s the baits.. the gear…and usually it is quite messy for the boat. We have extra hours of cleaning. Northerners have a wonderful time landing these sharks. It’s a chance to see them close. Jungle Jim’s Safari has 5-star reviews across the board.
